An Extract from Spirulina Platensis is a Selective Inhibitor of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 Penetration into HeLa Cells - K. Hayashi, T. Hayashi, N. Morita & Ichiro Kojima - Phytotherapy Research (Jan-Feb. 1993):
“The water‐soluble extract of Spirulina platensis achieved a dose‐dependent inhibition of the replication of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV‐1) in HeLa cells within the concentration range of 0.08–50 mg/mL. This extract proved to have no virucidal activity and did not interfere with adsorption to host cells. However, the extract affected viral penetration in a dose‐dependent manner. At 1 mg/mL the extract was found to inhibit virus‐specific protein synthesis without suppressing host cell protein synthesis if added to the cells 3 h before infection.”

“The highest antiviral activity was for HSV-2, with a selectivity index of 128. The antiviral activity was not due to a virucidal effect. Herpesvirus infection was inhibited at the initial events (adsorption and penetration) of the viral cycle. To initiate the isolation and identification of the compound that exhibits the antiviral activity of S. maxima, some extracts made by using several solvents with different polarity were evaluated by microplate inhibition assay using HSV-2. The highest antiviral activity was detected in the methanol-water 3:1, which suggests that the antiviral activity is probably due to highly polar compounds.”
Protein From Algae Shows Promise For Stopping SARS - American Thoracic Society - Science Daily (May 21, 2009):
“Researchers treated experimental mice with GRFT or a sham treatment and then inoculated them with the SARS virus. They analyzed the antiviral activity of GRFT and the extent to which the virus was able to invade and replicate in the mice at two, four and 10 days after infection. They found that mice who had not been treated with GRFT showed 20 times more plaque-forming units of virus than treated mice. They also noted that the lungs of untreated infected mice showed extensive necrotizing bronchitis and prominent edema, while mice treated with GRFT showed evidence of significantly less severe lung damage. Additionally, mice treated with GRFT did not experience the drastic weight loss of untreated mice, which lost 35 percent of their body mass. - "This indicates that not only did the GRFT stop the virus from replicating, but also prevented secondary outcomes, such as weight loss, that are associated with infection," said Ms. Wohlford-Lenane.” [relates to a different element from an algae - ‘Griffithsin’ or GRFT - but it highlights relevance of testing that compound and those in Spirulina on SARS-CoV-2 and other viruses]

“Anti-flu efficacy studies revealed that the Spirulina extract inhibited viral plaque formation in a broad range of influenza viruses, including oseltamivir-resistant strains. Spirulina extract was found to act at an early stage of infection to reduce virus yields in cells and improve survival in influenza-infected mice, with inhibition of influenza hemagglutination identified as one of the mechanisms involved. Together, these results suggest that the cold water extract of Spirulina might serve as a safe and effective therapeutic agent to manage influenza outbreaks.”
