Vaccines - usually given by injection, sometimes orally - introduce the body to a minuscule quantity of the illness that it needs to fight at some point in future. When successful, a vaccine manages to teach the immune system the most effective way to respond to - and defeat - the illness in question. Vaccines have proven to be a successful way of preventing viral illnesses.
COVID-19 vaccines have proven significantly effective against the SARS-CoV-2 virus, some showing 90% efficacy, which did decrease the severity of the Coronavirus Pandemic worldwide. What has emerged from recent research - of real relevance to vaccines - is that those with a better nutritional status (who eat more healthy nutrients) respond better to vaccines and also have decreased risk of experiencing side-effects. This is especially of importance to the elderly and immuno-compromised.
The first forms of vaccination (against Smallpox) originated in 16th Century China. Years later, Dr. Edward Jenner was to immunize an 8-year old boy against that same illness in 1796, infecting him with a tiny amount of Cowpox material. 'Vaccination' derives from the latin word for cow - 'vacca'.
Since the start of the 19th Century, vaccines have proven to be successful at controlling the spread of a wide range of potentially deadly viral threats, including: rabies, measles, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), hepatitis B, cholera, yellow fever, polio - and most recently COVID-19.
When 90-year-old Margaret Keenan received a Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine against COVID-19 at University Hospital in Coventry on 8th December 2020, this was the completion of a process that had begun - only eleven months earlier - when the SARS-CoV-2 genetic sequence data was shared to the scientific community in the January of 2020. Since then, dozens of vaccines have been approved and it is estimated (10.2023) that nearly 13 billion doses of COVID-19 have already been administered.

Countries with struggling economies are quite often unable to afford their own vaccination programs - helping out in these scenarios is one way in which the W.H.O. has had a such a significant impact since its inception in 1948. Routine vaccination programs - administering a series of vaccines to children, starting shortly after birth - do not exist in all countries. When 80 percent of a country's population are successfully vaccinated, the people as a whole take on what is known as 'herd immunity', which is what offers protection to those who are not able to be vaccinated due to a wide variety of health conditions. It is especially of concern if many of a nation's people are malnourished, as they are likely to have weakened immune system responsiveness. One of the key findings of Nutritional Immunology has been that there is a strong correlation between how healthily a person eats - their 'Nutritional Status' - and how susceptible they are to illnesses. In some areas, causality is proven in terms of deficiencies causing low immunity.
The science of 'Nutritional Immunology' has been intensively examining the way in which food chemicals can affect a person's ability to defend against infections.
Some nutritional immunologists are particularly interested in the way that people's immune systems may be made more effective against viral threats via changes in what they consume. Phase 1 of the 'AVD Research Project' has attempted a wide review of what has been discovered by scientists during the last hundred years. -
Worldwide interest has been initiated by a scientific realization that we do actually
possess firm knowledge of which dietary ingredients exhibit the most significant anti-viral effects. This is accompanied by the eagerness of researchers to devote time and resources to further investigations into the most potent dietary antivirals.
It is of great importance, to mankind as a whole, that scores of dietary ingredients have proven antiviral effects against the SARS-CoV-2 virus and COVID-19. What matters is for large-scale human trials to be undertaken so as to determine which combination of ingredients is most effective in practice, to deter this specific virus.
One question : what is the broadest spectrum of viruses that an 'AVD' can deter?
Professor Margaret Rayman (Distinguished Chair of Nutritional Medicine at the University of Surrey) and Philip Calder (Professor of Nutritional Immunology at the University of Southampton) submitted a document on the scientific evidence - regarding impact of nutrition on vaccine efficacy - to UK parliament under the title 'Optimising COVID-19 Vaccine Efficacy by Ensuring Nutritional Adequacy' (2021).
The professors' submission to parliament was grounded in the firmest evidence available and extensively reference the most up-to-date and relevant research in relation to the impact of nutrition on vaccine efficacy. A special focus of their paper is what may be done to improve the nutritional adequacy of the elderly (56 yrs +) so that their immune responses are optimized by the current COVID-19 vaccines.
Conclusions within the paper 'Optimising COVID-19 Vaccine Efficacy by Ensuring Nutritional Adequacy' point at the key benefits of ensuring the presence of specific vitamins and minerals in one's diet. Though the findings are especially in relation to elderly, they are relevant to all age-groups. A large amount of new research has only gone to further corroborate Profs. Rayman's and Calder's précis of the evidence : that specific combinations of micronutrients increase the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines in the elderly - and that the danger of side-effect risks is also lessened by the presence of those nutrients. It is good news from Nutritional Immunology, that says each of us can improve their own vaccine responsiveness.

An 'Anti-Viral Diet' has been extensively corroborated by science and is gradually being accepted as an integral part of how people may protect themselves against viruses and treat viral illnesses - one other option to make use of alongside vaccines and antiviral medications. However, Food Science does not currently receive even 1% as much financing as pharmaceutical or vaccine-related research. 10% of the profit from sales of the 'AVD' book are being donated towards essential projects in Anti-Viral Dietary Research.

Edouard d'Araille - Project Lead of Phase 1 of the 'AVD Research Project' - writes about an 'Anti-Viral Diet' that: "Regarding the effects of diet on disease, it is known that healthy, balanced nutrition has greater impact on immunity to viruses than any single vaccine. Science has proven this beyond a shadow of doubt." - YOUTUBE Video
'AVD' is a 3-Phase Research Project launched by The Academy of the Third Millennium (A3M). Phase 1 of this scientific inquiry is now complete and a summary of the findings are presented in the volume 'AVD: The Anti-Viral Diet' (2020-2022) available from this site. Information about the progress and purpose of Phases 2 and 3 of this ongoing A3M research program will be shared here soon and at the website A3M International.
